Background and History

The Research Institute of Development and European Affairs (RIDEA) is an independent, not-for-profit research-oriented institution, specialized and committed to the study and understanding of issues at the intersection of development and European affairs. Its projects are completely funded by donations from individuals, and private and public companies and institutions, to enable it to carry out its work and accomplish its mission. Hitherto, the organization has produced several policy briefs, position papers and studies on key issues pertaining to development, European integration processes and inter-ethnic relations, foreign affairs, international law, public policy, and the education sector. Similarly, it has also organized a series of conferences, seminars, and roundtables with relevant stakeholders on such topics.

The RIDEA team has in the past served in various relevant capacities to the Institute’s mission and the objectives it seeks to achieve, including work done for national institutions such as the Office of the Prime Minister of Kosovo, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the University of Prishtina, and so on.

Significantly, members of the RIDEA team have extensive experience in research with a variety of national and international research and education institutions. In the past, they have conducted research or delivered lectures at such institutions as Harvard University, Oxford University, Cambridge University, the University of Florence, Yale University, the University of Manchester, the University of Vienna, Ghent University, Free University of Amsterdam, The Hague Academy of International Law, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public and International Law, and so on.

Likewise, members of the RIDEA team have been active in the field of publications. They are authors or co-authors of several books, book chapters, and journal and other articles related to the region of Western Balkans and such fundamental concerns as the consolidation of democracy, European integration processes, rule of law, and protection of human and minority rights and fundamental freedoms. Similarly, RIDEA’s key staff members participated in different regional and international conferences related to these topics. The Institute maintains close links with numerous international professional networks and research and academic institutions (e.g., Centre for EU Studies - Ghent University, Centre for International Studies - Oxford University, etc.).
